HIMSS Advocates for Responsible Health Sector Innovation within EU’s Apply AI Strategy
HIMSS has submitted formal recommendations to the European Commission to ensure artificial intelligence in Europe supports responsible innovation, protects patients and drives digital transformation across the health sector.
In the letter addressing the forthcoming Apply AI Strategy, HIMSS emphasizes the need for AI policies that reinforce public trust, data protection, equity and clinical relevance, especially as the EU continues to implement major initiatives like the European Health Data Space.
“We believe the EU’s leadership on AI offers a powerful opportunity to improve health outcomes across borders,” said Tom Leary, HIMSS Senior Vice President and Head of Government Relations. “Our recommendations aim to ensure that AI is deployed ethically, safely and effectively in health systems.”
The recommendations also call for healthcare-specific AI guidance, regulatory sandboxes and support for subject matter experts, as well as investments in workforce training and real-time AI performance monitoring.
